Merging Roots

Elio Villafranca & William Cepeda blend the fiery rhythms of Cuba and Puerto Rico

Two titans of Afro-Caribbean music come together in Merging Roots, a once-in-a-generation collaboration between Cuban pianist Elio Villafranca and Puerto Rican trombonist William Cepeda. Fusing the fiery rhythms of Cuba and Puerto Rico with masterful jazz improvisation, this performance explores the rich tapestry of Afro-diasporic culture through groundbreaking sound. Expect powerful grooves, cultural storytelling, and deeply moving artistry — all on one unforgettable stage.

Introduced to each other after performing at previous Jazz & Roots Festival, these two visionary musicians share a deep artistic commitment to blending jazz with the rich musical traditions of their homelands. The Merging Roots project unites them in a dynamic exploration of the shared African roots connecting Cuba, Puerto Rico, and New Orleans. Both artists are celebrated for their ability to highlight cultural resilience through rhythm, improvisation, and storytelling.

The program begins with an engaging one-hour discussion, part of the festival’s Jazz & Justice Series, where Cepeda and Villafranca will share their musical journeys, cultural influences, and historical insights. They will then perform original compositions alongside music associated with legendary saxophonist Charles Neville—who was a main inspiration for the festival and whose legacy lives on through the work of Blues to Green, founded by his wife, Kristin Neville.

The Springfield concert is part of a New England tour made possible with generous support from Chamber Music America’s 2025 Presenter Consortium for Jazz Program. The tour includes performances at FirstWorks’ Summer Beats Series in Providence, RI (July 11), and Simsbury Meadows Performing Arts Center in Simsbury, CT (July 13). The performance is also supported by a NEFA New England States Touring grant.
